Morpheme Word Chain (Reading)

Purpose

Morphological awareness

Summary

The Morpheme Word Chain (Reading) drill supports morphological awareness through a chaining game that reinforces how morphemes combine and transform words. Chain morpheme transformations to build and modify words, focusing on morpheme manipulation and word family connections.

Materials Needed

Morpheme cards or the Spellcaster word mat.

How to deliver

  1. Build the first word using morpheme cards or the Spellcaster word mat, and have the learner read the word.
  2. Change a morpheme to make a new word, and have the learner read the new word.
  3. Continue changing morphemes until you have completed the word chain.
Suggested script
"I am going to change a part of the word, then you read the new word."

Common Issues & Prompts

Issue: Learner does not recognise the morpheme change

  • Do this: Draw the learner’s attention to the morpheme that has changed. Explain the meaning of the new morpheme and how it changes the word.
  • Example: You change ‘unhappy’ to ‘unhappiness’ by adding the suffix ‘-ness’. If the learner struggles, point out the added suffix and explain that ‘-ness’ turns the describing word into a naming word (noun).
  • Then: Have the learner read the word again with the new understanding.

Issue: Learner confuses morphemes with individual sounds

  • Do this: Remind the learner that morphemes are meaningful parts of words (prefixes, suffixes, base words), not individual sounds.
  • Example: The learner tries to change a single letter instead of a morpheme. Remind them: “We are changing whole word parts here – like prefixes and suffixes – not single sounds.”
  • Then: Model the morpheme change and have the learner try the next one.

Additional Tips

  • Start with familiar base words and common affixes so the learner can focus on the chaining process before moving to more complex morphemes.
  • Discuss the meaning of each word as it is formed to reinforce that morphemes carry meaning.
